The Power of Momentum

.
In terms of making significant changes in your life, it doesn’t matter if you feel completely ready. You just need to start. Ask yourself, “If I did feel ready, what would be the first step?” and then DO it. Energy is born of doing (most of us get this backward, waiting for the energy to come before the doing), and the momentum follows, to create what you want. Just
start. Now. Today. From wherever you are. Take a breath and make the plunge.

Before I was really feeling ready to release my weight – when I was still in that phase of “Oh, I’ll start when I’m really motivated” – my boyfriend (at the time) asked if I wanted to join the gym with him. Something inside went “aha” at discovering a moment of decision, an opportunity to change the direction of my life. I knew if I took the time to analyze, “Am I really ready to commit to going to the gym all the time?” the answer would have been a resounding NO; my energy was stagnant, stuck, and holding me back, so my answer came quickly.

Although I still didn’t feel entirely ready (and, pssst…if you’re going to wait until you are entirely ready, you might as well plunk down in that chair and come to terms with the body/health/job/relationship you have because you’re going to be keeping it), I said “Yes, I’d love to join the gym. Thank you.” This impulse decision raised my energy vibration, giving me more energy to take the next step. So I went to the gym, signed up for a year membership, spied a Weight Watchers, and in a split second decision pulled open the door – still not fully motivated but motivated enough to conquer this one more baby step – and signed up and stepped on the scale. Choosing conscious awareness, as painful as it was, compelled me to further action. Again, my energy and momentum increased.  Determined to see a different number the next week on the scale, I sought out the trainer to set an appointment.  Now I had set in motion a cause that would heighten my commitment – an obligation to another person. And, I now had a specific date I knew I would start exercising. Momentum going strong now. Because I had that date in place, I had created enough energy to hop on my treadmill the next morning. Momentum and energy increased again.

There’s more to it than that…creating a really clear idea of what I wanted to create in my life for one, but it all started there. A decision which created energy, which led to another decision, which created momentum and more energy, and soon the end result was so clear in my mind that nothing would stop me. (Result: From size 12 to size 4-6; from 168 pounds to 142.)

That’s really what it comes down to: a choice to change the direction your life is headed and to begin to create the momentum moving in the direction you now choose. Every time you stop and think too hard about the next step, you lose some of your momentum. Give yourself the gift of keeping focused on your goal and the next step — be it baby or bold. Momentum is
everything when it comes to creating lasting change.

So please…start something…now.?
